When I first went down the Hippy path, one of the first things that I started learning how to make was all of my bath and beauty products. I have always loved using a medium hold pomade to give my hair texture. Syfy had a mohawk for a few years now and through trial and error, I have created this oil-based pomade to work for him. Without water in this recipe, there is no need for preservation!

Whip it real good
After I started experimenting on Syfy's hair pomade, it didn't take long before I had come up with a hair pomade that we both liked. It was only a matter of messing with my oil to beeswax ratio, affecting the hardness of the recipe. My first batch finished, I let it sit on our kitchen counter overnight to harden further. In the morning we tested out the pomade and I realized that this pomade was much harder to use in this hard state. After contemplating the issue, I realized that all I needed to do was whip the mixture to lighten it up and make it easier to use on his hair. I pulled out my hand mixer and whipped up the heavy hold pomade and was extremely excited with the results. The end result was just like the pomade that I had once paid $10+ dollars for. Syfy tried it out on his hair and was totally stoked! He said it worked perfectly! It lasted all day long and had just the kind of hold that we were looking for.

DIY All-Natural Hair Styling Pomade
Hair pomade is simple and easy to make and is a staple part of any hair care routine. Know the ingredients in your pomade and save money by learning to make it yourself.
Materials
Heavy Hold Pomade
- ¾ cup beeswax pastilles
- ½ cup unrefined shea butter
- ½ cup jojoba oil
- 1 tsp. vitamin e (optional)
- 2 Tbsp. arrowroot powder (optional)
- 30 drops rosemary essential oil
- 20 drops lime essential oil
- 10 drops vanilla oleoresin
Medium Hold Pomade
- ¾ cup unrefined shea butter
- ½ cup beeswax pastilles
- ½ cup jojoba oil
- 1 tsp. vitamin e
- 2 Tbsp. arrowroot powder (optional)
- 30 drops rosemary essential oil
- 20 drops lime essential oil
- 10 drops vanilla oleoresin
Instructions
- In a double boiler, (I usually use a pyrex bowl in a saucepan of boiling water as my makeshift double boiler) melt the beeswax and shea butter, stirring every so often.
- Mix together arrowroot powder, jojoba oil, and essential oils in a small bowl. Using a fork, stir until the arrowroot is dissolved into the oil. If using Vitamin E to lengthen the shelf life of the pomade, poke the vitamin E pills squeezing the contents into the bowl and let cool until hardened.
- When the beeswax shea mixture is melted, remove it from the heat and add arrowroot/jojoba oil/essential oil mixture.
- Using your hand mixer, blend the hair pomade until it begins to turn into a pudding/taffy-like texture. (It shouldn't take too long since there is a decent amount of beeswax in the recipe!)
- Scoop into your designated container and store it in a cool dark place. The pomade will harden further overnight.
- Use only a small pea-sized amount on hair. A little goes a long way!
Notes
There are two different options that you can choose from depending on what type of hold you are looking for in your hair. Those who favor stiffer holds for mohawks and spiky hair will prefer the heavy hold recipe. Those who are looking for a more texturized hold will prefer the medium hold recipe. I like to use the medium hold pomade my hair to give my curls a little bit of texture and definition! (UPDATE - with short hair I love the medium pomade as well!)
