In the middle of winter, my skin starts to dry out hardcore, and I start looking for more ways to get moisture into it. After a particularly terrible bout of poison ivy a couple years back, I didn't have any money on hand and really wanted something soothing like an Aveeno oatmeal bath. I decided that it couldn't be hard to make and in the end, I made mine way better than Aveeno's by upgrading the ingredients in my recipe!
Oatmeal baths can soothe all sorts of skin conditions
Wild oats (Avina Sativa) have been a staple in skincare throughout much of recorded history. As early as 2000 BC, the Arabians and Egyptians used oats to beautify the skin. The ancient Greeks and Romans also documented the use of oat baths to heal skin ailments. Oats are not just great for breakfast in the morning, they are also really great at soothing all of your skin issues. Oats are naturally hydrating to the skin and release milky emollients that can soothe the itchiest of problems. Oatmeal baths are great for sensitive skin as well as:
- eczema and psoriasis
- boils, burns, and blisters
- sunburns
- chicken pox and measles
- bug bites, poison ivy/oak/sumac
- dry flaky skin
- your skin
Using a Blendtec blender to powder your ingredients
If you thought it might be hard to powder your ingredients for all of your powdered beauty products (cleansing grains, face masks, and more) you would be wrong! You likely have just what you need in your kitchen already! While you can use a food processor or blender, I like to use my Blendtec Blender to powder all of my beauty ingredients. It does an amazing job at powdering anything I put in there, and makes the consistency super smooth! You can control the consistency by pulsing the ingredients until they are the consistency you are looking for!
DIY Soothing Coconut Milk & Oat Bath
Oatmeal is a natural cleanser to the skin, there is no need to wash with soap following this bath. In fact, some skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, do better if you cleanse with non-soap cleansers, such as this! You can increase the awesomeness of this milk & oat bath by adding in some lavender and/or chamomile flowers to the mix!
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup oats
- 1/4 cup arrowroot powder
- 1/2 cup coconut milk powder (optional - alternatively you can use other milk powders of your choice)
- 10 drops lavender essential oil
- 10 drops Roman chamomile essential oil
DIRECTIONS
- Pulse oats in a blender or food processor until powdered. Add in arrowroot powder and milk powder, and pulse in your blender until everything is blended together.
- Add essential oil drops and pulse your blender/food processor a few times, to mix them in.
- Store in a mason jar, in a cool dry location, when not in use.
TO USE
Run bath water at full force and sprinkle ¼ - 1/2 cup of oatmeal bath underneath running bath water. Stir any oatmeal that might settle at the bottom, into the bath. Soak in the oatmeal bath for at least 20 minutes, or more if desired! If you are experiencing severely dry, itchy, or rash covered skin, use up to 1 cup oat bath, for a more intensely moisturizing bath. To heal dry skin, do not wipe your skin dry when getting out of the tub, PAT it dry instead. Follow with a healing body butter. (I like to make an herbal infused whipped body butter!)
