There is no such thing as blueberry essential oil. I wish that I could get essential oils in mango, strawberry, pineapple, and blueberry, but alas they just don’t exist! If you see a website proclaiming their FLAVOR oils as essential oils, you should most definitely be worried. The fruit essential oils that DO exist are citrus ones like grapefruit, sweet orange, lemon, and lime. I have been wanting to try and find a way to infuse the flavors that I can’t find, into oil, but either the products I find are chemically created, or they are for water based concoctions.
After finding very little in answer to my quest, I decided to try and experiment to see what I could come up with. The first thing that came to mind, was that I had freeze-dried blueberries. I wondered, if I ran them through my food processor until they were the consistency of a powder. I put a small amount in water and saw that it instantly turned the water a purple/blue hue and most of it, with the exception of the seeds, dissolved into the water. This was the kind of reaction I was hoping the oil would produce when I mixed the two together. This wasn’t the case. The blueberry powder just sat at the bottom of the oil, doing nothing at all. It didn’t color the oil, it didn’t dissolve in the oil, nor did the oil seem to activate the re-hydration process like water, which means it was still preserved.
I suddenly got an idea on what I should do with the oil that I had put the blueberry powder in, I was going to turn it into a blueberry sugar scrub! Blueberries are chock full of antioxidants that help fight aging, soften skin, and destroy acne. High in Vitamin A and C, blueberries are one of those awesome beauty fruits that no matter how you ingest them, they do the body good; inside and out!
The best part about this scrub is when you scrub it on your skin and it interacts with water! It turns purple! Don’t worry, my skin didn’t turn purple, but I wouldn’t let it sit on your skin over a long period of time as blueberries have been known to stain. After using this amazing sugar scrub, I decided to shave my freshly softened legs, with my homemade whipped shaving cream, and then topped them off with a bit of whipped body butter just after I got out of the shower. My legs have NEVER been so soft and silky smooth! I love the trio together so much, that I am going to develop a set to sell on Etsy when I open shop, it will be for silky smooth legs! Just because I am “Hippy” doesn’t mean I have to adhere to the stereotype of uncleanliness and hairiness. I prefer to stereotype to think of us New Hippies as natural goddesses!
- 1/4 cup freeze dried blueberries, ground to a powder in a blender/food processor
- 1 cup organic fair trade sugar
- 1/3 cup oil (I used a combination of jajoba and olive oil, but you could use coconut, almond, apricot kernel, etc.)
- 30 drops grapefruit essential oil
- 25 drops sweet orange essential oil
- 5 drops lime essential oil
- Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix until completely combined.
- Scoop into a mason jar or some other container, and keep in a cool dark area.
- When using in the shower, scoop out the amount you are going to use, taking care not to get water into the jar. Scrub down and rinse off!
Blueberries have been used to help in treating acne as well, because of their high content of Vitamin A. If you are using an oil cleansing method, this would be an excellent addition to your oil cleanser, instead of baking soda, as your exfolliant! This also would help treat fine lines and signs of aging.
What other fruits do you think we should experiment? I am wanting to try something with strawberries next!
