When I was trying to make up a batch of my liquid dish soap one day, I was in a hurry and trying to dissolve everything quickly, so I threw it in my Ninja Food Processor and whipped it up, thinking it would just stir it REALLY well. What I didn’t think about or expect, was that it would WHIP the castile soap so that it cooled differently than the liquid dish soap recipe. In the end, after it had cooled sufficiently, it had turned into this fluffy whipped soap, and an idea sprung from the mistake that I had made. I can make my own shaving cream!
I am of Greek origins. This means that my hair grows back thick and dark, leaving me with few options in the shaving cream area, that work well. When I first started going green, I simply used my liquid Dr. Bronner’s castile soap and lathered it up to shave with. I must say, that alone was WAY better than any store bought shaving cream that I have ever used. The castile soap works SO well at moisturizing my legs and giving my razor a good glide to keep the razor burn away. I hadn’t really thought about making an actual shaving cream, until I accidentally made it.
I tried out the first batch on my legs and it worked very well, but I thought that it still needed something extra in it to make my legs EVEN smoother and softer after shaving them, so I made the recipe all over again so that I could add in some almond oil and vegetable glycerin. This really did the trick! Shaving my legs the second time around (a week or so later lol) and they came out even smoother than the first time!
In this recipe I chose to use the Lavender castile soap because lavender is a wonderful analgesic (that means it helps with pain, so if you cut yourself you’ll be keeping it clean and helping with the pain at the same time!).
Lavender Skin SO Soft Homemade Shaving Cream
INGREDIENTS
- 1 ¾ cups boiling water
- 1 Tbsp Borax
- 1 bar castile soap, grated (I used Dr. Bronner’s Lavender Castile Soap)
- 1 tsp. almond oil (you can replace this with other moisturizing oils if you like, I just thought this would be nice for my skin!)
- 1 tsp. vegetable glycerin
- 25 drops lavender essential oil (or another scent you might prefer)
DIRECTIONS
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the boiling water, borax, and castile soap. Stir until the soap is completely dissolved.
- Pour the soap mixture into a blender or food processor (or use an electric hand mixer) and blend until white and frothy.
- Pour the frothy soap contents BACK INTO THE LARGE MIXING BOWL. This step is important. I thought that I could just let it cool in the blender but it kept separating because it wasn’t getting enough oxygen to cool it off fast enough.
- Add the almond oil, vegetable glycerin, and essential oils. Mix together with a spoon and let sit to cool, stirring every so often when you remember.
- Store in a glass jar and lather a heap onto your legs (or wherever else you need to shave) and shave those hairs away!
